"Cometários? Criticas?"
ReplyDeleteI always thought that the whore/saint rejection was a rejection of being treated as a symbol/stereotype instead of an individual.
But it's true that it could be read the way you write. It certainly happens in many non-mainstream movements. The desire to assimilate and normalize, and all.
Anyway, that's all. Google translate is not good enough yet, i mean, i don't know Portuguese at all :D
(also, Femen is puzzling organisation. Though media seems to love it, obviously)
Yes, it is a rejection, but it's not appropriate in a slut march. The point of a slut march is that EVEN IF you are perceived as a whore or a saint, you should have human rights and be treated with respect. It's not such a big deal for the saints, as we aren't burning them at the stake anymore, but it is a big deal indeed for the whores. Sex workers are a very stigmatized and criminalized group who are, in many case, the victims of active prejudice on the part of certain women's groups involved in these marches.
ReplyDeleteHere in Brazil, FEMEN's leader was revealed to have certain unsavory neo-nazi ties. And, given the pernicious xenophobia practiced by pretty much all of the group's chapters ("Immigrant muslims are evil and are killing our women! No! It's ssex tourists! No! It's foreign football fans!"), my patience with them has come to an end.
