I'm not actually against VAWA, but I DO think that people should actually look into what legislation does and not support it reflexively, simply because it has a cool name.

In this particular case, having gone through the immigration process twice, I think VAWA may very well place a burden on binational couples seeking to migrate.

Friends of mine have said that certain Latina womens groups in the States support it and they feel that's a seal of approval. I wonder, though. I wonder to what degree U.S. American-born and/or raised latinas can really understand what the immigration process is like for someone getting married in another country. I also wonder to what degree those organizations are dominated by, say, Mexican and Cuban women who may have different migration law needs than Brazilian or Peruvian women.

When I actually read what VAWA would add to an already horrifically com, plicated immigration process for foreign brides, I wondered how many other hidden traps it contains. I was unfreinded by several people un Facebook, simply for pointing this out. That made me even more worried about VAWA's content.Thaddeus Gregory Blanchettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09359423010378429288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5129515758261094307.post-28560778099815086582013-01-01T00:33:15.182-02:002013-01-01T00:33:15.182-02:00Sometimes feminist legislation takes on too much o...Sometimes feminist legislation takes on too much of a protective quality, so that we end up with a situation worse than it might have been.

I hear from a Facebook contact that legislation designed to protect sex workers can actually result in justifying more police harassment.

Similarly, creating culturally feminine environments can often lead to women who are not maternal and extremely sensitive to others being kept out of certain workplaces, simply because they don't fit.Jenniferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15364161667997825733noreply@blogger.com
